I had a very productive and pleasant time while visiting relatives in Dallas. Last night I decided to drive down to Kerrville, TX to pick-up the southern tier route. You can learn more about the route here http://www.adv-cycling.org/routes/southerntier.cfm
My initial route choice was to take service roads paralleling I-20 from Dallas till I reached I-10 where I could pick-up the southern tier route for a stretch. Although I will actually have longer stretches between services by picking up the southern tier in Kerrville, I'm hoping the ride will be more interesting. I road parallel to I-30 for a couple of days coming into Dallas and it was rather loud and somewhat boring.
I picked up and installed a new set of tires in Dallas. The folding Ritchey Tom Slicks will become my spares once again. I should now have enough rubber to get me to the coast, if I choose to go that far.
By 1:00 PM I had the rental car returned and the bike fully assembled. After checking the maps, I decided it would be a good idea to spend the night in Kerrville and take a little more time to plan for the next few days. I will stop by the grocery store on the way out of town tomorrow. If I don't find a place to camp sooner, I will be riding 70 miles in hilly terrain to Leaky. It's very likely I won't be able to post another update till I get to Del Rio which is about 165 miles from here.

Dallas Skyline also from the skyway

I made a pit stop at this visitor center in Johnson city. Seems like a nice place to visit.
